OPI Texas Collection: The Sorbets

Mmmm, sorbet sounds delish! I love the idea of sorbet on the nails--all juicy and soft. When the press releases first came out, a lot of people--myself included--speculated that this ''new special finish'' is really just a jelly finish. The verdict? Yeah, kinda. They're semi-sheer jellies that aren't streaky!

Like I said, I love the idea of this. In actual practice...meh. I guess what I don't understand is why these are so sheer. Who are these marketed for? When you have a dark color and it's almost opaque but not quite, as these are, the VNL you see makes it look like there's dirt under your nails, in my opinion. That's a look I try to avoid. Why wouldn't you make these jellies completely opaque, or more transparent? This in-between business is kind of bugging me. That's just my two cents. I'm wearing one of the polishes right now and trying to get used to that slight's hard.

Although I'm not thrilled with the opacity, the colors and formulas are great. I mean, really terrific. They build up very nicely and don't get streaky at all. Each swatch, except one, is show with four coats. Below shows you how opaque they are.
From left to right, 1-4 coats. The polish is Guy Meets Gal-veston.

First things first. The name Guy Meets Gal-veston is bugging me. I get that it's a play on ''guy meets gal,'' but you don't really hear the word ''gal'' in Galveston, I don't think. At least not when I say it aloud. I feel like ''Girl Meets Galveston'' would have been better. ANYWAY, that's so unimportant. Guy Meets Gal-veston is a nice dark pink--it reminds me of a raspberry sorbet. Yum! Although you can't tell from the picture, I still had VNL in real life. VNL IRL. Haha.

Too Hot Pink to Hold 'Em is another sweet-looking pink. I only needed three coats to build it up to the same opacity that all the others had. VNL on this one is actually pretty minimal.

Houston We Have a Purple is the only one of the bunch that gave me issues. It just didn't apply well and got streaky. Too bad, too, because I love the color. Like a grape juice stain.

My favorite! Big Hair...Big Nails is a poppy-colored coral. I'm wearing this one right now, actually. Again, even though you can't really detect it in the picture, you have that ever so faint VNL. Just obvious enough that you can see it. Grr. But I love the color, so I'm trying to get used to it.

Y'all Come Back Now, Ya Hear? An apostrophe, a question mark, and a comma all in the same name. Phew. But moving on. Basic orange jelly. I've said it before, but orange isn't really flattering on me, so I'm not diggin' this one. It's a nice polish, though.

Do You Think I'm Tex-y? Again with the punctuation. ''Texy'' would have been fine, sans hyphen. I mean, we'd get the joke. This is the color of a raspberry popsicle. I know, I've used the word ''raspberry'' already to describe a polish in this collection. So maybe this is more of a mixed berry. Anyway, it definitely leads towards purple, but doesn't have the same application issues that Houston We Have a Purple does.

So...thoughts on the whole sorbet concept? I looove the texture of these polishes, but I so wish they were just a tad more opaque!!! I just don't like that VNL, no matter how subtle. It doesn't look like one of those sheer polishes that you're supposed to see the nail with; it's looks like you should have put one more coat on to achieve full opacity. Except that I put one more coat on Big Hair...Big Nails last night after swatching. After five coats I can still see a little VNL. Bleh!

They dry rather quickly, but they're still dent-able for quite some time afterwards, so be cautious. The finish is very glossy, though, even without a topcoat!

Will I wear these? Um...I want to. Because I love the juiciness of the colors. I guess I'll just have to learn to embrace the VNL? Well, I'm going to give it a few test runs before I decide that I absolutely can't live with it.

Man, I am chatty today. I really do want to hear what you guys think, instead of me just babbling away. Share, share, share! Do you like the colors? Or jelly finishes in general? Don't forget to check out the shimmers and cremes of the collection, if you haven't already!

  1. I hate VNL... this whole collection is a pass for me, honestly. "Sorbet" makes this finish sound yummy, but I know I'll hate it.

  2. i just purchased Big Hair, Big Nails, love the colour :) I wonder if a coat or 2 of an "underwear" colour would help with the illusion of opacity. when I try this polish out I'm going to lay down a base of 2 coats of OPI bubble bath o see if it helps.

  3. The colours are gorgeous!
If you really hate the VNL, you could try to see if you can find a truly pigmented nude that matches your nail bed. Use that as a base coat so there's no VNL to start with, then layer up your sorbets. :)
I haven't found a pigmented polish of which the colour matches my nail bed yet, but if you do that might be the solution to using these.

  4. I want this collection sooooo bad! But I can't afford it right now... hopefully they stick around for a few months but Burlesque wasn't out for long so we'll see.

  5. I love the entire collection! I just discovered I love jellys! :P I'm wearing one right now but it just took the usual 2 coats to be fully opaque o_o maybe that's the difference between jelly and sorbet...

  6. I love the summer-y colors BUT usually I hate VNL (and having to apply more than three coats); sometimes I get caught by a jelly but seeing the nail underneath makes me feel like the mani is...imperfect. Maybe I just have to get used to it, or maybe I have to stick to shimmer and cremes (and suede and everything else).

  7. I love the sorbets, but I agree, VNL takes some getting used too, LOL :)

  8. These are really pretty. I'm probably not going to buy any of them. I'm trying to cut way down on my polish buying. I also don't like sheer polish too much!

  9. I have 2 of them but I'm thinking of getting Do You Think I'm Tex-y? also because I LOVE jellies!
